BYLAW REVISION

The bylaws changes proposed at a special Congregational Meeting on January 8, 2012 were tabled for the purpose of further tweaking by a group of volunteers. We are happy to report that the commitee concluded its work and new language will be available for your review beginning Sunday, January 15th. Please look for the material on the table in the Reception Room. Therefore, a special Congregational Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 29th immediately after the service for the purpose of considering the proposed bylaws revisions. At this time the nominating committee is putting out a call for anyone who would like to serve on a board to make their desire known to Robin Roe (Board of Trustees), Pete Roe (at large member), Kathy Ljungqvist (Prudential Board), Linda Disney (F & O Board), Kristine Houghtalen (C.E. Board).

PERSON TO PERSON CONCERNS

It was great to see Carolyn Savastano back in church only six days after knee surgery.  Carolyn is a real trooper and doesn't let anything get her down!

In speaking with Rev. Wyman recently, he told me some news about his granddaughters that I wanted to share with all of you.  Averill Wyman Blackburn (Susan's daughter) is a junior attending St. Andrews Theological Seminary in Scotland.  Kylie Wyman (Stephen's daughter) is attending a university in Leiden, Holland.  She is studying Art.  Henry and Sona are very proud grandparents!!

THE CHURCH WORLD SERVICE HAS AN URGENT CALL OUT FOR BABY KITS.

Once again, the F&O Board is calling upon your generosity for this project. Last year we were able to deliver 36 kits and already have a good start for this year. They are delivered to the Riverhead Methodist Church, who in turn gets them to the Church World Services Ministry to be handed out to moms in need for their newborns.

Items that are needed per kit:

Six cloth diapers

Two T-shirts or undershirts (no onesies) (6-9 mo)

Two washcloths

Two gowns or sleepers

Two diaper pins

One sweater or sweatshirt (Can be handknitted or crocheted)

Two receiving blankets (one can be a hand-knitted or crocheted baby blanket)

Items must be new and under 12 months in size.

Any monies that are donated will help with the cost of shipping.

As always, thank you in advance for your generosity and support!

A MOMENT IN CHURCH HISTORY

According to the writings of Frank Overton, MD and Clerk of the Church, the Rev. James H. Thomas, who served the church from May 1, 1844 to April 1, 1849 was an excellent pastor. He clearly outlined the practical fields of church work, and organized its activities with skill and good judgment.

Mr. Thomas introduced system and order into the work of the church by starting a permanent record book of 370 pages, eight by thirteen inches in size. This book contains the minutes of the business meetings of the church for eighty years, from January 18, 1845 up to January 14, 1925.

The first three pages contain an outline of the church in which is the following item, dated April 30, 1845: "Since the organization of this church there have been received into her communion 438 members. There are now (April 30, 1845) 204 members. There are about 115 or 120 families connected with the congregation."

An alphabetical list of the members who joined between 1793 and 1845 is recorded on pages 367-370. The same minute book, pages 292-366, contains lists of members who were added to the church rolls from 1845 to 1895.

Upcoming Events

Sunday School Lesson:

This week the children learned about Moses and the plagues.  Of all the plagues, our children thought the best plague would be darkness (many said they would get much needed sleep!), but they were quite surprised when they tried to live in darkness for just a few minutes and they changed their minds after we talked about what darkness for a long time would mean for their ability to gather and raise food.  As a group we acted out the plagues and Pharaoh's final release of the Israelites from Egypt after the plague which killed the first born of those families not under the protection of God.  Thank you to those who helped with the Sunday School this week including Lura Logan, Madison Troiano, and Kyle Foros from the confirmation class.

Last week Noah Smith brought home the box with nothing in it  and brought it back full of good things including a snake, a Bible, a picture of a cross, a stuffed goat, and even a coconut.  Next week Kjell Houghtalen will bring it back with something in it that reminds him of God, Jesus, or the church~we are all looking forward to seeing what is in there.

Read to Feed:  Read to Feed began on January 8.  This is designed to help sponsor our Heifer project.  The bulletin board near the CE office and children's library has a beautiful illustration of what we are trying to buy, an Ark!  Please support our children by sponsoring them to read either by the number of books, the time spent reading, or by the amount of pages.  if you would like to sponsor a specific child please tell Tammy and she can help to match you with someone.  All children are asked to please participate in this event and prizes will be given by the Sunday School and Library for participation.  If the children take a book from our library, the library will also sponsor them.  Thank you for your participation.

January 22 Acolyte Pizza Party:  Thank you Everyone!  We had a wonderful lunch yesterday as our acolytes met for the first of many events.  Rev. Wolter opened our meal with a time of prayer and then it was on to business.  This group of young people would like to take an active role in the church including fundraising for those less fortunate, fellowship activities, and learning more about our rich church history.  Look for our future events where acolytes and their families take their service to the church to the next step.  Thank you to Grant Houghtalen for picking up the pizza for us.

February 11, Parents Date Night, 5-9 PM:  On February 11, just before Valentine's Day the CE Board will host a parent's date night.  Please come drop off your children, of all ages, at 5PM and we will provide dinner-delicious pizza, and fun for only $10 per family.  The children will have a special Valentine's Day craft, a movie and a host of other activities while parents enjoy some time alone for this romantic holiday.  Please confirm attendance with Tammy Torelli.

The new acolyte schedule is posted on the bulletin board in the rear of the church.  Please take a moment to see when your child is scheduled to be the acolyte.

Our acolytes last week were Lucas Torelli and Madison Troiano.  Thank you for your service.
